Mary would have been 17 when she married William Newton in 1709. Looking at the license, it says that "they have their parents' consent (if living) or otherwise their Tutors or Govern(ess?) be thereunto agreeing and (?) they be marryed in the Parish Church of W Retford(?)". Perhaps the reference to living parents was for William and the Tutors for Mary, being as her parents Richard and Anne are dead by 1709.
