b about 1717 according to death records, father Thomas Burton
Sister Mary Burton (1720-1777), died (Q) 31 Oct 1777 at Crossels in Kirthwaite, spinster, aged 57.

No baptism records for John and Mary, so I suspect they their parents were Quakers and quite a few Quaker records are missing.

From Broadmire.

So the only thing we are certain of was that in 1777 there were a Quaker brother and sister, John Burton (1717-1784) and Mary Burton (1720-1777). Where did this family come from?

John Burton was a Quaker from Broadmire when he married Sarah Mason 8 May 1751. This is a bit confusing as Broadmire was owned by Richard Mason (1634-1709) and he died there (not a Quaker). In his will, Richard left Broadmire to his son Richard Mason (1680-). He also mentions a son Thomas Mason of Stonehouse (1665-). Witness of will in 1709 was a certain Ellen Burton (who was she?). Someone else who signed the probate was a Christopher Burton.

A couple of other interesting supporting actions:

  1. in the will of John Haygarth of Hobsons 8 Jul 1728, the executor of the will is "his cousin Thomas Burton of Broadmire". This means that John Burton's father Thomas was already the owner of Broadmire by 1728.

  2. in the will of Margaret Shearman 17 May 1736, of Loaning in Dent, there is a legacy for "Thomas Burton of Broadmire". This supports the Burtons being in Broadmire by 1728.

So sometime between 1709 and 1728 it seems that Thomas Burton became the owner or at least the resident of Broadmire.

No children in Dent or Garsdale.
perhaps George Burton d 3 Feb 1709 (Greg) at Dent

Parents of Thomas Burton possibly William Burton (1652-1734) and Eleanor Haygarth (1653-1711) (in this case Thomas born 4 Sep 1686)
or
William Burton (1637-1686) and Isabell Thistlethwaite (1653-1710) - but don't have a baptism for this Thomas.

possible birth Thomas Burton 2 Sep 1686 at Dent
possible death Thomas Burton 25 Dec 1761 (not a Quaker) at Dent or 1 Sep 1763 (Q)
