Originally thought his parents were Robert Banks Smith and Eliza Bush, but this proved to be false, being as the John Smith son of Robert and Eliza was still living with his parents in South Anston in 1871. There are no John Smiths born in Lincoln in 1837, but two born in 1838, one with mother Grundy, the other with mother Elizabeth Clover. Have been unable to find either of them. What we do know is that John Smith moved to Alfreton around 1861, where he was employed in the mines. He lived in the Birchwood district, practically next door to Mary Machin, who he got pregnant in 1862, when she was just 14 years old. Had 14 children with Mary Machin, but never seems to have got round to marrying her. Died at Huthwaite, Notts 3Q1894.
