Joe Johnson, son of Thomas and Sarah, and brother to my grandmother Edith Johnson Goodall, was born 20 September 1878 in Newton. He was baptised 15 Apr 1881 at Tibshelf, together with Kate, Fanny, Lillie and Jane Annie. He married Alice Katherine Cash 4 June 1906 at St Like's Derby, ref: 2080977 (PR St Luke's, Derby, available online at familysearch.org)
They had a daughter, (Gladys) Emily, born 11 August 1907. Emily died February 2004 in Tibshelf.
Joe was one of the Johnson chrysanthemum growers, J. & T. Johnson, of Tibshelf. The other was brother Tom Johnson (b1884). When Joe and Tom retired, the business was taken over by Emily's husband Jim Patilla, by Tom's son Thomas and his half-brother Harry Caunt. The business was later known as Patilla/Johnson.
In the 1911 census, Joe is still a coalminer. In the 1939 census, he is a nurseryman.
He died 28 May 1862 and was buried in Tibshelf Parish Church. Probate was granted to Emily 3 Aug 1962.
