Born to Frances Johnson while she was in the workhouse in Ashby, 30 July 1861. Not sure who the father could be. Unlikely to have been William Astle, as he was still married to Hannah Higgins at the time, even though George did grow up as "George Hassall", and is listed as son of William Hassall in 1871 census, following Frances's marriage to William in 1864. Also unlikely is James Bott, being as he was committed as a lunatic in Leicester Asylum at the time. Need to acquire birth certificate to see if this gives additional information. There is also another George Bott born in the same time-period to James and Jane Bott. It may be necessary to buy both birth certificates, to see the parentage and birth places.
