Between 1891 and 1894, he and his friend George Chapman of Hackleton, Northants (half a mile from Piddington) moved to Tibshelf, presumably to look for jobs as miners. m 23 Feb 1895 at Mansfield Register Office to Lillie Johnson (ref: Mansfield 7b 120), while in 1894 George Chapman married Lillie's sister Fanny. 1901 census: living with wife Lille Johnson and children Evelyn, Doris and William in Elmton, Derbyshire, about 11m NE of Tibshelf, just north of Bolsover. 1911 census: living with wife Lillie and children Evelina, William and Fanny in Doncaster. The census says that they had a total of 5 children, of which 4 were alive in 1911.
