Baptised 5 Oct 1834 in Ibstock, Leicestershire, parents William and Lydia. After being engaged first to Miriam Cuthbert of Swepstone, whose father forbade their proposed marriage in April 1854 because she was udner-age, Reuben married Sophia Glover 23 Oct 1854 at Heather. 2 children, both born at Ibstock, Ellen b1855 and Lizzie b1857. It seems that around 1858 Reuben and Sophia separated. There is no trace of an official divorce. There is a Reuben Johnson living in Aylburton, Gloucestershire in the 1861 census. It could be him, he is with a Mary Ann Johnson b1837 in Guildford, and a baby girl Mary Ann Johnson b1858 in Worcester. After 1861 there is no clear trace of any of them. The "wife" and "daughter" may not even really have had the last name Johnson, it could have been attributed by the census collector. There is in fact no trace of a marriage of Reuben around that time. In any case, he must have either died or divorced from Sophia, because on 9 Dec 1861, Sophia re-married, to Isaac Harvey. Of course, it could also be a bigamous marriage. In her marriage certificate to Isaac Harvey it says she is a "spinster", which is somewhat misleading, although there are various dictionary definitions (e.g. Websters) that define a spinster as "a woman who is not married, divorced or widowed". My suspicion is that they separated and each set up new lives elsewhere. After 1861, I can find no trace of Reuben or Mary Ann "Johnson" nor the child Mary Ann at all. We also have no concrete idea of Mary Ann's maiden name. Checking the child births in Worcester in 1858, the only candidate for a child without a specified father in the central Worcester area seems to be Mary Ann Williams. I could not, however, find the official birth certificate, most likely registered with the father's name.
