Joseph Johnson was christened 18 Jun 1809 in Coleorton, Leicestershire. The location of his birth has been given variously as Coleorton (census 1851), Thringstone (census 1861 and 1871).

He married Sarah Watson on 28 July 1828, in Breedon, Leicestershire. Note that the year was definitely 1828, the priest forgot to include the final 8 on the extract, but the previous marriage in the registers was 21 July 1828. We are descended from their eldest child, Frances Johnson, who was the mother of Thomas Johnson.

Notes from Walter Lomas in 1981: Other grandchildren of Joseph Johnson and Sarah are:
Thomas Johnson b1852 (son of Frances Johnson and William Astle), Lount;
John Bott b1856 (son of Frances Johnson and James Bott), Lount;
Laban Johnson b1858 (son of Elizabeth Johnson b1831 and Harvey), Lount;
Mary A. Johnson b. abt. 1865, Lount, (parents?);
Frederick Johnson b1868 (son of Sarah Johnson b1848), Staunton Harold;
Elizabeth Johnson b. abt. 1869, Lount, (parents Harriet Heath nee Johnson b1843 and John Heath b1848 jpl)

Laban b1858 was Thomas's cousin and was born at the "Stewards" cottage, Lount. He was an illegitimate son of Elizabeth (Frances's sister b1831) and Harvey, a foreman at Lount Pottery where Elizabeth worked. Like Thomas, Laban retained his mother's name "Johnson". Laban had 4 sons and 4 daughters and lived in Tibshelf. Laban is shown on the 1861 Census for Lount/Worthington as being age 2 years, grandson, born in Lount.

On the 1871 Census for Worthington, Gelsmoor, the following people are listed as living in the household with Joseph & Sarah:
Joseph Johnson age 61 Coalminer,
Sarah Johnson (wife) age 61:
John (son) age 36 years unmarried Coalminer
Harriet Heath (daughter) age 29
Thomas (grandson) age 19, Coalminer (son of Frances)
John Bott (grandson) age 15 Scholar (son of Frances)
Mary A. Johnson (granddaughter) age 6 Scholar
Elizabeth Johnson (granddaughter) age 2 (daughter of Harriet Johnson b1843)
NOTE: Laban (grandson) does not appear in this Census with the family, because Elizabeth was now married to James Richards, and they have a separate census entry.

Died 3 Jan 1878 at Gelsmoor, Worthington, ref: Jan-Mar 1878 Ashby 7a 71
