His death certificate gives 31 Oct 1859 as birthday, but this cannot be correct (see UK GRO register). US census returns for 1900 and 1910 give his birthday as Oct 1857, which also does not coincide with the GRO data. There is also an inconsistency in his wife's obituary, which says that (in 1930) she is survived by her husband?
