b 9 May 1672 at Brington, father Nic/Rich/Wm (parents possibly Nicolas and Margit according to findmypast, but no proof of this anywhere) The original record with the name of Nicolas's father is not clear at all. It could be Nic, or Ric or Wm. The problem with the name being Nic is that there are no Nicolas Gent's born 20 years before, and no sign of a Nicolas Gent marriage anywhere before the son's baptism in 1672. Similarly for Ric (Richard). Wm is the best theoretical solution but the priest's handwriting for other cases of Wm is different, so deciding on Wm is forcing it a bit. In favour of the father being William, though, is the marriage in Brington of William Gent and Elizabeth Kenning 8 Nov 1668 at Brington, and the birth of a son William to them on 18 Oct 1669 at Brington. This would mean that Nicolas born in 1672 had an elder brother William born in 1669. This would tie in with the double marriages in Brington on 24 Dec 1697 of:
Nicolas Gent to Lettice Halliwell
William Gent to Ann Halliwell Looks like brothers and sisters who married the same day. So there is a strong temptation to say that Nicolas's father was William. A complication is that it seems there was a Jane Gent daughter of William and Elizabeth b 10 Dec 1672 at Brington. The parish records are quite strange, they do not seem to be in strict chronological order, and there is some doubt as to whether the year is 1672 or 1673. It would be useful to see the microfish in Salt Lake City again, as they appear to be copies of a slightly different version of the parish records. There is also the possibility that Nicolas was in reality born or baptised in 1671.
