She also had a child with her brother-in-law Joseph Downing, husband of Sarah Clarke, child registered as William Green b3Q1861, later he used the name William Downing, and most census returns for some reason always indicated his birth year as 1863. Following her sister Sarah's death in 1863, she lived with Joseph Downing. It is not clear whether her husband Thomas Green was still alive or not. There are no convincing deaths of a Thomas Green in the period. There do not seem to be any marriages of Joseph Downing with Maria, thus suggesting that her husband was still alive. Where he was is another matter, not found in any subsequent census returns. 1871: living in Derby with Joseph Downing and her daughter by Thomas green, Isadora Green. 1881: living in Langley Mill, Derbyshire, with Joseph Downing and their child William, now known as William Downing. 1891: living in Burton with daughter Isadora, now married to James Watson, and with 2 young grandchildren James Percy and Elsie Verona.
