John Burton married Jane Sidgsweeke in 1642. He was baprised 22 Aug 1619, but it is not 100% clear who was his father. There are 3 possibilities, Henry, William and James.

  1. Henry: We don't have any Henrys in our line, so I have discarded this.

  2. William: we do have Williams in our line, so this is a possibility. There is for example a William Burton son of John Burton of Hakergill (which is just south of Gibbs Hall, Dent) born in 1653. Here the problem is that "our" John Burton and family were from Deepdale, not Hakergill, so this William son of John is not ours. There are no other Williams resulting from John's marriage in 1642.

  3. James: this is also a possibility and nearly all ancestry trees have selected James, baptised 22 Aug 1619. I believe though that they have selected James principally because in 1651 there was the death of a John Burton, whose father was James. They have then retroactively selected the John Burton born in 1619 whose father was James. Normally, however, the names of parents are included in death registrations only for children and spinsters. I believe in fact that the 1651 death is in reality that of John Burton born in 1643. The original entry says "John the sonne of James Burton of Highgill Hall buryed the 30th of May and died the twenty ninth of May in Anno Doni 1651". Highgill Hall is 22 miles east of Dent (54.2904, -2.02469), but we know that our John Burton lived in Deepdale, Dent.
Despite this, if we discard the 1651 death, the birth on 22 Aug 1619 is a good possibility.

First conclusion: John Burton was baptised 22 Aug 1619, father James!

John married Jane Sidgsweeke on 15 September 1642 at Dent.
Children:

  • Agnes bp 17 Dec 1648 of Nunhouse, Deepdale, Dent; FHL 1472792/1 #079
  • James bp 13 Nov 1650; FHL 1472792/1 #084
  • Anna probably born between 1643 and 1647, but not in Dent. Perhaps after marriage her parents lived somewhere else before Nunhouse, Deepdale? I checked registers in Thornton-in-Lonsdale, Ingleton, Clapham, Sedbergh, but found nothing. An alternative would be for her birth to be between 1653 and 1660, when records were missing.

Having discarded a 1651 death for John Burton, we now have to decide when he died. In the records there is a gap of 7 years for deaths between 1653 and 1660. Being as there are no deaths registered of John Burtons between 1660 and 1678, it seems likely that he died between 1653 and 1660.

There is a probate record for a John Burton of Kirthwaite dated 2 Jul 1675 but this is not ours, it contains no mention of a wife or children, and mentions a living father called Richard.

Concluding, John Burton died between 1653-1660, and his widow died in 1663.
