Shared note

Ernest Henry Goodall was actually born as Ernest Henry Babb, illegitimate child of Ellenor Babb, who was a servant on the farm of Thomas Goodall, who was 9 years her senior. Ernest was born 7 Sept 1869 (exact date from Canadian death certificate), and Thomas Goodall only married her after the event, sometime between Oct-Dec 1869. If we want the exact date, we will have to buy the marriage certificate.
Ellenor seems to have run away to have her child in Derby, not in Ellastone, where Thomas's farm was. Ellastone is a village about 5 miles SW of Ashbourne, just over the border in Staffordshire.
When they eventually got round to having Ernest baptised, this was done in Stanton St Mary's Church, about 3 miles north of Ellastone, on 30 July 1871. The irascible vicar recorded the child as illegitimate, despite the couple having being married now for nearly 2 years, and the name it was baptised with was Ernest Henry Goodall (first names) and Babb (as surname)!! Furthermore, the same day, the happy couple also had their second child baptised as Rhoda Jane Babb. The vicar must have been annoyed, as it should have been Goodall. The official registration of the birth of Rhoda specifies in fact the name Rhoda Jane Goodall, born Oct-Dec 1870.
Just to further complicate the picture, the official census in 1871 recorded both children with the surname Goodall. And to complicate things even more, there was another Rhoda Jane Goodall born in 1873, to Ernest's uncle, Trevor Goodall (b1845).
When we get to the 1881 census, Thomas and Ellenor have 6 children living with them, all named Goodall and all born at Stanton. But young Ernest is not with them, he is living with Uncle Trevor. No wife named for Trevor in 1881, strangely he is not recorded as being a widower, but wife Sarah seems to have disappeared. However, also living with Trevor is his mother Rhoda, who was also the mother of Thomas, Ernest's father. Strangely, in the 1881 census, Ernest is registered in the census as Ernest Henry Babb!!!! Perhaps there was some bad blood between Ernest and his father.
Ernest emigrated to Canada most likely in 1883, although there is conflicting information on this.
He married Rosetta Levett in Victoria 8 Dec 1902.
In 1911 he and Rosetta were living in Nanaimo with children Trevor Charles (b 11 Oct 1903), Ernest Walter (b Jan 1906) and Rosalee May (Dotsie) (b Jun 1911).
Around 1912 the family moved to Port Alberni, where they were living during the 1921 census.
Ernest died 28 Jul 1948 at Port Alberni, and buried 31 July 1948.
