According to census returns, his birth was around 1814 at Worthington, but no trace found in parish records. There is a Joseph Richards who was baptised at Griffydam Methodist 11 Sep 1811, but he was born 23 Apr 1805, which is in contrast with all census returns for his life, which indicate him being 10 years younger than that.
