Laban was the illegitimate child of Elizabeth, and he was born at the Stewards' Cottage in Lount in 1858. Like Thomas, Frances's son, Laban retained his mother's maiden name of Johnson. The father was (according to W J Lomas writing in 1982) a certain Harvey, who was the foreman at the Lount Pottery where Elizabeth Johnson worked. He was baptised 26 Aug 1860 at Breedon.
