Shared note

Most probably his name was William.

Not very clear from son Nicholas's baptism, whether the name of Nicolas's father is Nic(olas), Ric(hard) or Wm(William).
The problem with the name being Nic is that there are no Nicolas Gent's born 20 years before, and no sign of a Nicolas Gent marriage anywhere before the son's baptism in 1672. Similarly for Ric (Richard). Wm is the best theoretical solution but the priest's handwriting for other cases of Wm is different, so deciding on Wm is forcing it a bit. In favour of the father being William, though, is the marriage in Brington of William Gent and Elizabeth Kenning 8 Nov 1668 at Brington, and the birth of a son William to them on 18 Oct 1669 at Brington. This would mean that Nicolas born in 1672 had an elder brother William born in 1669. This would tie in with the double marriages in Brington on 24 Dec 1697 of:

  1. Nicolas Gent to Lettice Halliwell
  2. William Gent to Ann Halliwell
Looks like brothers and sisters who married the same day.

Assume the name was William.
