Schoolmaster (this information comes from his daughter Mary Shepherd's baptism record). m 27 May 1826 at Sedbergh to Barbara Dodd, who was from Garsdale. FHL 1849408/6 #1100. d 11 Sep 1826 at Frostrow, Sedbergh, so only 3 months after marriage, although he did manage to get his wife pregnant in that time. Age at death 26, so he was born in 1800. FHL 1849408/6 #1112 Finding William's birth was not easy. There is a William Shepherd (b1772) who married 12 Feb 1799 (FHL 90596 #279/645) to Elizabeth Robinson (b 13 Jan 1775) by licence at Cockermouth, Brigham, some 50 miles NW of Sedbergh. They too though have other children at Cockermouth including a candidate William Shepherd b 15 Dec 1800 bp 10 Jan 1801 (FHL 1472292, FHL 90596 #286/645). Given the distance from Sedbergh, the main supporting feature for this William is that his father William was a schoolmaster, and so it seemed possible that his son also became a schoolmaster and moved to Garsdale, where he married Barbara Dodd in 1826. However, I subsequently found that this William married Eleanor Taylor in Cockermouth, Brigham on 9 May1822 (FHL 90573 #101/693) and died there in 1856, so he is not ours. So the best (and only) local candidate was the William born at Grayrigg, but his father's name "Arthur" does not appear in any subsequent generations. William Shepherd does not seem to be related to the other Shepherds of Sedbergh: There is a William Shepherd of Howgill (9m NW Garsdale; 54.349, -2.567), b 18 Aug 1782, bp 15 Sep 1782 at Sedbergh, parents John and Alice, but this would have made him 44 if he married in 1826. jpl sedbergh p225. Finding William's birth was not easy.
