In 1928 she emigrated to Canada with her parents and brother and sisters, living in the Rocky Mountains in the Elk Valley, British Columbia. She returned to the UK in 1935, and was sent into service as a Tweeny at Etwall Hall in Derbyshire. In 1937 she met Walter Lomas on Normanton Recreation Ground in Derby. They were married on 23 January 1943 at St Thomas's Church, Derby. During the war, Muriel worked for a Munitions Factory. After the war, Muriel and Walter moved to 27 Dorchester Ave, Chaddesden, Derby, where they stayed until 1962. Muriel worked for a while at Aitons in Derby around 1961. In 1962 they moved to Long Eaton, where Muriel lived the rest of her life. She worked at Chilwell as a Civil Servant for 18 years, until retirement in 1980. She was a keen gardener, and also used to do painting and decorating. Following Walter's death in 2002, she travelled back to the Elk Valley in Canada to see where she grew up.
