Shared note

Born 23 Mar 1814, baptised 10 Apr 1814, parents Jospeh Wall and Jane Fowler.
Not 100% certain about the date of birth and parents, for various reasons. The first is that his marriage certificate in 1837 says his father was John Wall, a farmer. This could have been a clerical error by the priest who wrote John instead of Joseph, being as the groom was called John. All indications are that John Wall was born in Darley near Matlock between 1812 and 1816. However, there do not seem to be any John Wall (senior) who had children in the indicated range. There is however a Joseph Hall Wall, born 1791, who married Jane Fowler in 1814 and who had a whole load of children in Darley between 1814 and 1829. John was the eldest born in 1814. There was however another John born 1821, but there doesn't seem to be a death of the first John, who appears to have been born 6 months before the marriage. The second John was even living with his uncle John in 1841, so perhaps Joseph had a brother John. No sign of his marriage or any children though. So it is all a bit unsatisfactory. Perhaps there were 2 Joseph and Jane who had children and they got mixed up in the baptism records? There are also inconsistencies with the siblings of John Wall b1814 which may indicate 2 separate families.
Married Mary Slack 28 Sep 1837 at Ashover. No children.
John is always indicated in the census returns as being a coachman, and he and Mary lived in Wilne (1841, 1851, 1861) before moving to Ripley (1871, 1881, 1891). She died in Ripley in 1894, while John died 3Q1898 at Matlock, buried 5 Sep 1898 at Matlock.
